Vietnam is the second largest coffee exporter in the world with an output of nearly 1,500,000 tons per year. Although the War in Vietnam caused disruptions in coffee production and sales, coffee production subsequently increased rapidly from just 6,000 tons in 1975 to nearly 2 million tons in 2016 and easily easily brought Vietnam to the position of one of the leading coffee exporting countries in the world today.
Vietnam focuses mainly on robusta coffee with cheaper prices on the international market. Robusta beans have twice as much caffeine as Arabica beans, making the coffee taste more bitter. Vietnam is also the world’s No. 1 robusta coffee producer, accounting for more than 40% of global output in the 2019–2020 crop year. Europe is still the largest market for Vietnamese coffee according to statistics in the 2022-2023 coffee season.
